About this seminar:

In recent years, astronomy has emerged as a growing niche within South Africa’s national innovation system. The co-hosting of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project by South Africa has accelerated this growth trajectory. This case study examines the competences, capabilities, interactive capabilities, and dynamic interactive capabilities of the SKA and its partner organisations, with a view to identifying the factors that have enabled alignment and success, and the factors that have acted as bottlenecks or constraints. Overall, the SKA provides a success story, showing how a South African organisation can meet demanding mandates and achieve excellence on the international stage through well organised and strategically oriented interactive capabilities required to manage the complex skills, knowledge and technology to deliver on the SKA mandate, and through long term, sufficiently funded, well informed, highly organised skills planning that has been responsive to the skills demands of the SKA.
