This paper give a bird's eye view of the co-operatives sector in South Africa in an effort to highlight the need for a thorough investigation of its challenges. Its starts by explicating the co-operatives concept and thereafter give motivation for the study of co-operatives, overview of the state of co-operatives in South Africa and thereafter a snapshot of co-operatives internationally and the lessons South Africa could benefit from the international experience.
